Eavesdropping on Tom Ghent

Joan Baez

If you listen closely you will hear Joan Baez singing behind me on this song of mine which I recorded in 1971. I did the same for her on her recording of “The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down“…. And Lord knows I love my friends !

Bobby Bare covered Tom Ghent’s Easy as Dreaming, released on the Sony label in 1983.

Tim Hardin

I knew Tim Hardin as far back as our Greenwich Village days, when I was playing a basket house, called The Zig Zag, across the street from The Night Owl where Tim Hardin and Fred Neil often played, and which would soon spawn The Lovin’ Spoonful. Tim, for all his talent, was a very troubled young man. This is one of his classics, which I recorded and released in 2010. I was hoping to capture his inner turmoil, which I had so often seen. I believe, that to some extent, I did…..

Memorial Day

For all our veterans as well as all you Boomers and all of you who may not have lived through the history about which I wrote “WHEN ALL US OLD FOLKIES WERE YOUNG“… God bless you, and may God bless America.

And a fan replied –

Always love this song….I remember it well from that show in Somerville, MA, Tom. I think I’ve told you before that I was SO blown away by it then….still am. Such a wonderful telling for all of us boomers of that point in time.

Big Muddy

I wrote this with my friends Dave Gillon, Joe Dougherty, and Don Goodman one Nashville morning in around ’73. We’d been up all night drinking beer, when suddenly the idea for this song appeared. The more we worked on it the more I felt the need for a Mississippi John Hurt type accompaniment. John had befriended me in my mid 60’s Gaslight days, and had a profound influence on me, in many ways – That said, “Let’s take a little trip down the Bayou together” !

Bobby Goldsboro

Around 1973, I was walking down Music Row when I saw Bobby Goldsboro leaning against a car… As I passed him, he said, ” Aren’t you the guy who wrote Whiskey Whiskey” ? I said yes and he invited me to his office, where he asked if I had any songs for him… I said yes and he handed me a guitar… I played him this and one other… He recorded them both !

JOHNNY CASH HERITAGE FESTIVAL 2017

The Johnny Cash Heritage Festival took place 19-21 October, 2017. The ARTISTS LINEUP included members of the Cash family and the three-time Grammy winner who Rosanne Cash calls “Uncle Kris” – Others know him as Kris Kristofferson,

It was more than a gig or a festival. The “heritage” aspect of the event provided another dimension – Time and care was taken to provide visitors with a glimpse into the area and the massive role it played in shaping Johnny Cash, and the wider Cash family.

Stalls, films and displays ensured an intimate, family friendly festival.

Fan Feedback

Kris’ fans turned out for the event.

“I was there with my girlfriend, it was like being in the presence of God.” – Rick Johnson

“That show was a good experience. Rosanne Cash was good also. I’d never seen that much cotton in one place.” – Kurt Terry

“My friend, Amber, and I were totally amazed at the cotton fields!” – Carol R.

Contributed by R Johnson

The concert was held in the field next to the place where the Man in Black, Johnny Cash, spent his childhhod. I knew from interviews and reports that Dyess, Ark. is cotton country. Fan observations about the sheer scale of cotton made me smile.

The Gift: The Journey of Johnny Cash

The movie, The Gift: The Journey of Johnny Cash, was released on YouTube Originals in November 2019. It is available free of charge (and advert free to YouTube Premium subscribers.)

This movie was made with the full cooperation of the Cash estate. It’s a documentary exploring the life of the complex and legendary Man in Black. It covers the ups and downs of his career as well as his personal life.

Sweet Temptation

Sweet Temptation – Many Kristofferson fans might have never heard it. Anita watched a performance on YouTube and got Fans chatting about it in our Facebook Fan Group. The song is not well known, so these extracts might help others.

The Question

I have a question, after listening to Kris and Lorrie Morgan sing “Sweet Temptation”. I really like that song, and so far as I am aware, Kris has never recorded it. Does anyone know otherwise? I can’t even find the lyrics anywhere, so I don’t know if he ever published it either. There are other songs of the same name, but I can’t find any lyrics for this version. I tried transcribing it from this performance, but it’s difficult, especially when Lorrie sings, because she holds the microphone so close to her mouth. Since Kris is playing the guitar, he is further from the mic and you can do a better job of catching the lyrics. Let me know if any of you have encountered any information about this sexy little song?

Sweet Temptation – Song Lyrics

Hello, sweet temptation, you are such an old surprise
We’ve got all the feelin’s down by heart
Thank you for the welcome shot of welcome in your eyes
Let me tell the truth before we start.

Don’t you go no closer to the hunger in my heart
You know the danger if you do
Love is wild enough to tear the universe apart
I ain’t gonna take that chance with you.

“Cause I love my woman now, and I love my kids
I believe in tryin’ to be true
So I don’t fool around no more, sweetheart, but if I did
I’d sure like to fool around with you.

Hey, you old coyote, you don’t look so bad to me
I ain’t scared of anything you do
It just tears me up inside to know for just a while
I could even make believe in you.

But I love my woman now, and I love my kids
I believe in tryin’ to be true
So I don’t fool around no more, sweetheart, but if I did
I’d sure like to fool around with you.

Hello sweet temptation, you are such an old surprise.

The Experts

Kris’ fans are loyal and dedicated – They are also experts. Individually, every fan has a favourite something – song, era, performance, lyric, venue or topic. Collectively, they know everything I have ever asked or wondered about Kris Kristofferson – Though they might not always tell 🙂

The Discussion

I remember hearing this one, a favorite for sure, at several concerts, but not sure if it was ever released on any album. On Lori’s verses, she sings: “Hey, you old coyote, you don’t look so bad to me, I ain’t scared of anything you do. It just tears me up inside to know for just a while, I could even make believe in you.”

Emily Gmitter

I don’t think it was ever recorded I had a copy of it on a cassette from a recording at a concert many years ago and thought that was the only record of it I was delighted to see the video. There were a couple more on there I’ve never heard since I think one was called Paper Heart.

Brigit Freeman

I think Paper Heart may have been sung by Elvis in the movie GI Blues. Not positive though

Laura Nickerson Papineau

I don’t remember Kris associated in any way with Paper Heart….now I’ll be tearing my brain up trying to recall any song with a reference to “paper heart”….maybe it was in the song, and Brigit just thought that was the title. But my brain keeps coming up empty.

With Mickey Raphael on harmonica …..

Victoria Gensheimer Doula

Mickey Raphael is not the only familiar face among the musicians. There are several musicians who appeared in Don Was’s documentary on the Highwaymen when they did their final album “The Road Goes On Forever” — the drummer, one of the guitarists, and Don Was is there, too. I recognize his hair and his hat. I’m not sure why they seemed to be the house band for this show, but they were.

The Film – Paper / Cheating Hearts

Emily found the song on Tina Stapelfeldt’s channel, with the note, “The song is with the end credits to the movie “Paper Hearts” aka “Cheating Hearts” (1993)”

Kris Kristofferson plays a very small part in this film, most of the clips where he does appear are in the video.

The film was released under two names, Paper Hearts and Cheating Hearts – Adding to the confusion. Emily is going to watch the DVD and might tell us more later. We were all very pleased to hear that Kris Kristofferson does not die in this film, and we added it to our list.

In Summary

No known audio recording of the Kris Krsitofferson song Sweet Temptation has been published or released. The song has been performed on stage, and appears in the credits of a film. The lyrics have now been transcribed and checked by Kris’ fans. If you have anything to add, please leave us a comment.

Kris Kristofferson Fargo 2019

Kris Kristofferson Fargo 2019 – What a night!

The gig at the Fargo Theatre went as smooth as a polished train. The evening never stopped there. After a band member from Dempsey’s left a note on the bus, Kris and his wife went downtown and kept the evening alive – Thrilling fans and friends alike.

Ed Gonzales said, “Saw him (Kris) again in Fargo last night. Feeling Nostalgic.
48 years of listening to his songs. The voice isn’t the same, but the words don’t change. He is truly an amazing storyteller. To miss his Willie Nelson award next week so as not to have to cancel a show demonstrates his dedication to the music. He sure doesn’t need to do this for the money. Truly a wonderful man and legacy.

It was a wonderful evening, and Doug Colosio shared this pic that Lisa Kristofferson took from the wings.

Night Out in Fargo

Kris and Lisa Kristofferson went out after the gig. The story goes that they arrived at Dempsey’s around 11.30 pm, and Kris joined the band, 32 Below, for some stage time.

See what Matthew Tinjum had to say ….

Kristofferson, Wellington 2019

Kris Kristofferson Wellington 2019 – with the Strangers at the Michael Fowler Centre on 11 October.

Ticket stub

Judy Hefford is a long time Kris Fan. She attended the gig in Wellington on 11 October 2019 and is now (like many others), a dedicated Scott Joss. Scott seems to have won as many many fans on his Australia/New Zealand tour as he did in Europe. People warm to him and his wife, Judy. They are known for being a generous, open and friendly couple. Oh, did I mention that Scott Joss is a helluva fiddler, too? Judy told Scott’s fan group

After seeing Scott’s recent posts would like to share some of my thoughts on going to the show in Wellington, N Z. (My first live show since seeing Jim Reeves!) I thought I was crossing something off my bucket list, but it’s still on there – to see Kris, and Scott, again! Any chance I get, Kris is just so unbelievably great.

Senator Scott Brown was in the Audience

The pictures in his tweet about the evening show just how special this night was to him as well as Kris Kristofferson and the whole lineup

As has been suggested, I spoke to Judy who was standing alone at the merchandise counter, she immediately asked my name and chatted like we were old friends, just so nice and friendly!

The Michael Fowler Centre was fully booked, and the acoustics are great. Kris’s voice was stronger than I had expected. He didn’t move around like he used to, but each time he smiled or ‘sparked’ the audience erupted so loudly – NZ audiences are renown for being reserved – But not this time.

Nobody around me seemed to know who Scott was, but during intermission, all were talking about how good he was. And his smile! I was proud to be able to tell them about him and Judy. Scott made a huge number of fans that night. His new CD sold out, apparently by the 2nd concert. I tried several shops the next day to get it and although none had it they did say they would try to get it in.

Sitting in the row behind me a lady said it was her 3rd show, she “loved Kris to bits” and was going to all 5 shows from the bottom to the top of New Zealand. Envy from me!

During the standing ovation at the end, I was delighted to see my sophisticated step-son clapping, stamping, and yahoo-ing his enjoyment of the show along with the rest of us.

On the way out I was embarrassed to find myself patting Judy’s arm as I told her I had my photo taken with Scott, and how wonderful the show was. She’s just that kind of person – just lovely. Judy and Scott are a great couple.

Other Fans Agree

Love your post. I went to four out of five concerts in New Zealand. Each one was awesome and memorable to me! Wellington definitely was the best. The interaction with Kris and Scott was awesome & so was the crowd. I took three family members who are now number one fans! The band was a huge blessing. New Zealand thanks you for travelling to far. We love & appreciate Kris Kristofferson & the Strangers!

Kristofferson Morwell 2019

Kris Kristofferson performed with Scott Joss, Doug Colosio and Jeff Ingraham at Kernot Hall, Morwell on 24 September as part of their extensive Australia / New Zealand tour.

Venue

Kernot Hall, Morwell.

Australian Tour

The tour has been a great success so far. This night was no different. Australia welcomed Kris and the band with open arms, and they have had a wonderful time, despite the hectic schedule.

Fantastic night, I couldn’t stop smiling. Sadly it couldn’t last forever but it certainly was a night to remember. Kris’s voice was so strong and never wavered and he looked very well.

Patricia Ann

Australian Tour Promo Video

A quick flip through the photographs taken by the band members shows that they have made the most of their time Down Under. Scott Joss enjoys long, scenic walks exploring the area with his wife. Doug Colosio and Jeff Ingraham have been making time to take in some tours. They are all, including Kris, looking surprisingly relaxed – Almost as if they were on vacation.

Morwell Setlist

Gig Pic

Taken at the Morwell Gig, with thanks to Patricia Ann

Fans have spoken very highly of Scott and Judy Joss – many have never seen any of the band members before this tour. Scott has been doing most of the meeting and greeting. His wife, Judy has been running the busy merchandise stall.

Scott was fantastic very friendly and easy to talk with, as was Judy. I certainly hope that this will not be last time I see of any of them again.

Patricia Ann

We are confident it won’t be, Patricia – Your country has been so very welcoming that I am sure they will want to return.

Scott Joss’ latest album features Kris Kristofferson and has been very well received by fans worldwide.

Kris & Sheryl Crow

Sheryl Crow’s new album is out. Writer and collaborators on the album include Lukas Nelson. Vince Gill, Stevie Nicks, Chris Stapelton, Bonnie Raitt, Eric Clapton, Sting, Brandi Carlile, Bob Dylan, Johnny Cash …..

There isn’t much more to be said after that – The lists of greats just keeps on growing to make this THE album of albums.
